Gyros Galore!

This summer we discovered a wonderful little piece of Greek cuisine called the gyro. Somehow we had both managed to go some 3 decades never having a gyro and this summer, we had three. Our first experience was at Mr. Gyros on Lake Michigan Drive. We’ve driven past Mr. Gyros a million times and after some minor coaxing, I finally convinced my wife to give it a try. The owner was straight from the Mediterranean and he assured us the food was 100% authentic, the finest quality, and the freshest ingredients. We both agreed the food was fantastic, although a little pricey. But, in their defense, we did get what we paid for – great food, fresh ingredients, prepared while we waited.

Our next gyro stop brought us to the Cottage Bar, a Grand Rapids staple. We’re no strangers to the Cottage Bar – you’ll see us there for the annual chili cook-off each year, and the food never disappoints. We ordered our gyro with Cottage fries, and as usual, the food was incredible. I wouldn’t normally think of the Cottage bar as having great gyros, but they’re definitely worthy of a recommendation.

Our third, and most recent stop for gyros brought us to Chicago Style Gyros on Leonard, near US-131. Sulaiman Chalabi and Sied Pektas opened Chicago Style Gyros 7 months ago. After moving from Kurdistan to Chicago several years ago, they found a love for Chicago style gyros and lucky for us, they are now sharing their own gyro recipes right here in Grand Rapids.

Special pricing at lunch will get you a whole gyro, fries and drink for just $6.99. Turns out its really good food at great price (and very filling!) I like mine loaded so I got all the fixins’ – cucumber sauce, hummus, olives, gouda, and a slew of vegetables. My wife likes her food a little more plain-Jane style so she opted for just the cucumber sauce and gouda.

Chicago Style Gyros reminds me that many of my favorite places have a simple atmosphere, but very unique and authentic food. I feel good giving my business to places like this because I know who I am giving my money to.

Next time you’re looking for a great alternative to a burger or sandwich, go for the gyro! And, since Chicago Style Gyros is new to the area, definitely give them a try. You can’t go wrong with their lunch special. This is a restaurant I’d love to see around for many years to come.
